Heavy haul carriers move oversize turbine components under state permits. Compare carriers on permitting, route planning, securement, insurance and receiving coordination — not on rate alone.
What a heavy haul carrier does on a turbine project
Whole wind turbine blades, tower sections and nacelles usually exceed legal size or weight limits, so they move as oversize or overweight loads. A wind turbine heavy haul transport carrier supplies specialized trailers, obtains or coordinates permits for each state on the route, and arranges escorts where required. The Federal Highway Administration's oversize/overweight permit resources explain that these permits are issued by individual states, so a multi-state move needs approval from each one.
For retired blades, many projects cut blades on site into sections that fit standard flatbeds. Whether a heavy haul carrier is needed at all depends on that decision — see our windmill blade transport guide.
Questions to ask each carrier
| Topic | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Which trailer types do you propose for this component and length? |
| Permits | Who applies for each state permit, and what lead time do you assume? |
| Route | Has a route survey been done for turns, bridges, overhead lines and site roads? |
| Escorts | Which pilot cars or police escorts are expected, and who arranges them? |
| Securement | How are loads secured and protected against blade surface damage? |
| Insurance | What cargo and liability coverage applies, and what is excluded? |
| Receiving | Who books delivery appointments and handles a rejected load? |
Ask every carrier to price the same inventory, pickup site and destination so proposals are comparable.
Carrier versus recycling scope
A carrier moves the load; it does not establish that a processor will accept it. Confirm the receiving facility's preparation specification, accepted dimensions and delivery documentation before loads are scheduled. Our blade permits checklist and transport damage prevention guide cover the related approvals and handling.
Records to keep
- Permits for every state on the route
- Route survey and any approved changes
- Bills of lading listing each blade or section
- Photos at loading and delivery
- Signed receiving records from the destination
Request a transport and recycling review
Share your inventory, pickup location and timing and we'll review transport alongside the receiving and recycling scope. Carrier selection, permitting responsibility and schedule are agreed in the written project scope.
